~A New Experience

Today, I started a four week class on how to play Pickleball! There were seven of us in the class, plus the instructor.

Pickleball, is a mix of tennis, ping-pong, paddleball and badminton and is considered to be the fastest growing sport in the United States, especially among seniors. The instructor stated, “Pickleball is now played in every state.”

You play with large ping-pong paddles and a wiffle ball on a shortened tennis court. Two or four people can play.

The sport began in 1965 in Washington State and has been a popular sport in the southern states for many years. Just look around any retirement community in Florida or Arizona and you will see Pickleball courts.

The sport has finally reached Loveland, Colorado with weekly games at several of the counties local parks, including several at our local recreation center. Loveland has its own Pickleball Club with 55 members. Who knew!

During our travels south for the winter I have seen many Pickleball Courts and many happy people playing, and seemingly having lots of fun.

This first class was fun and I look forward to learning more about how to play and then getting out there!

  1. We have several friends that have taken up the game this past year and are now addicted. John was an excellent tennis player back in the day and I played a little so we hope to try the game one day. My only apprehension is the way they play in more crowded courts. I’m not a fan of rotating in by paddles and playing with different partners. Good luck with your course. Keep us posted on how it goes:)

    1. Hubby and I played Tennis, back in the day, we were not great, but had a fun time playing. In the class and watching a game with experience players, I have witnessed the rotational process. It is not bad at all; you get to play with varied experienced people. I can see however, that one would want to just go out and play with a foursome of your choosing!

    1. Hi Ingrid! Yes Pickleball has arrived in Colorado. Evidently it has been around for a while. I truly had no idea and we go to our gym 3 times a week when we are home. It is a fun, social, experience and can be demanding physically. Chat with you soon!

  2. Pickleball sounds like lots of fun….a good friend of ours is an instructor. Have fun!
I love the new look of your blog Sheila!

    1. Gay, you are the first and only person that has mentioned my new blog layout. I thank you so much for commenting on my new look. It was “scary” to change, but I like it a lot. This theme is suppose to load quickly, so I am hoping it does given my photos.

You have the perfect opportunity to learn and play the sport with your friend. You would probably enjoy it given your love of physical activity!

      Happy Hiking Girl!!
